La pourriture escamotée : cachez ce cadavre que je ne saurais voir ! Quelques destins post mortem à nos jour à la lumière de l'archéo(thanato)logie : étudier les os appréhender le corps

Abstract : Louis-Vincent Thomas's approach has undoubtedly helped us to understand the major role of decay in the course of funeral practices. Thanatology, which is not a science of death but rather a grouping of all the knowledge on which it is based, has as one of its research themes the experience of death for the relatives of the deceased in general and the techniques of corpse management in particular. His masterly work, which really knew no epistemological boundaries, has however only too rarely integrated archaeological data. Above all, as this researcher died more than twenty years ago, his work does not take into account the most recent results of the archaeothanatology of funerary ensembles. Yet this relatively recent discipline, which has modified the way in which burials are excavated and studied, is essential for our knowledge of past societies; it now makes it possible to reflect on the complexity of corpse management, from its treatment to its reification. In this respect, decay appears to be a key element in the grid for reading the variability of funerary practices throughout the ages, whether it is a question of hiding it, accelerating it, overcoming it or even abolishing it. Moreover, it is up to the archaeologist to distinguish between what is the intention of the burial group and taphonomic phenomena. This is what this work shows, whether it be cases of cremations or embalming or the unpublished study of a funerary complex recently excavated in Angola. Understanding the deceased from the point of view of decomposition and its stigmata in the ground also makes it possible to propose methodological reflections in the context of legal cases ("forensic archaeology").
