Le Néolithique moyen en Languedoc oriental : caractérisation stylistique de la céramique, nouvelles réflexions sur la culture chasséenne

Abstract : Over the last thirty years, the appreciation of the Southern Middle Neolithic has progressed considerably thanks to a large number of diplomas and collective research projects on the subject, supported by the multiplication of preventive archaeological operations. In the field of ceramic and lithic studies, in particular, work on the Garonnais, the Aude valley, Quercy, Auvergne, the middle Rhone valley, the Alps and Provence has enabled a better understanding of the chronology and variability of cultural expressions between 4500 and 3500 B.C. In the eastern Languedoc, a combined approach to cut lithic industries and ceramics has been carried out since the late 1990s. Two parallel theses on these two types of artefacts were initiated, but only that of V. Lea on the lithic industries was able to be published (Lea, 2002). Nevertheless, a synthesis article has made it possible to compare for the first time the lithic periodisation with a preliminary ceramic seriation (Georjon and Lea, 2013). The present thesis is therefore the culmination of work initiated 20 years ago on the ceramic periodisation of the Middle Neolithic in Eastern Languedoc. To do this, I have selected a corpus of 11 finely analysed series, supplemented by various assemblages that were dealt with more quickly. Most of these series are the result of my ceramic study work on preventive archaeology operations. Some are unpublished, others partially or fully published. All the studies already carried out have been entirely remodelled in the light of a unified methodology. The problematic developed in this thesis addresses three main aspects: the chrono-cultural and chrono-geographical approach of the Eastern Languedoc in the context of the Southern Middle Neolithic, the characterisation of ceramic productions and, more broadly, the state of the art of the definition of the Chassean. The chrono-cultural and chrono-geographical questions are at the forefront: how does the seriation that I produce correlate with the different periodisations that exist in the Midi? What is the place of the eastern Languedoc, a region with contrasting landscapes, limited to the east and west by two rivers of unequal importance (the Hérault and the Rhône) and to the north by the foothills of the Massif Central, in the southern domain during this period? The treatment of this aspect is based on a precise evaluation of the archaeological contexts, the composition and the state of conservation of the series. A cross-reference of ceramic and lithic periodisations with absolute chronology is also proposed. The analysis of the ceramic productions of my corpus is based on the technological studies that I have been able to carry out. By crossing technological, typological and typometric data, I have tried to shed light on two questions: Can we detect some of the mechanisms that contribute to forging the identity of production and producers on a site? How can we specify the level of standardisation of Chassean productions, a characteristic that has long been put forward for this culture? Finally, the question of the validity of the Chassean concept has been raised almost since its creation. The two colloquia dealing with the Chassaean more than 25 years apart (Nemours, 1989; Beeching et al., 1991 - Paris, 2014; Perrin et al., 2016), show that it has not been resolved despite the recent attempt at deconstruction / reconstruction proposed by S. Van Willigen and his teams (Borrello and Van Willigen, 2012; 2013; 2014; Van Willigen et al., 2010; 2012; 2014; 2016). What do the data from the Eastern Languedoc contribute to this debate? More broadly, how can we move forward on this point in view of recent contributions on the Middle Neolithic of Southwestern Europe?
