Ethnoarchéologie de l'architecture vernaculaire au Sénégal oriental : une histoire des techniques de construction en terre crue (XVIIIe-XXe siècles)

Abstract : Architecture is often presented by archaeologists as one aspect of cultural identification, though it has only rarely been studied in sub-Saharan Africa. It is nonetheless important to make use of all technical and physical (“actualist”) markers in the interpretation of archaeological remains. Furthermore, certain cultural knowledge and practices are today at risk of disappearing and must be protected before they are gone for good. Our objective in this article is to present the technical variability observed in the walls and roofs of dwellings, granaries, and kitchens in eastern Senegal, then to present the evolution of these architectural techniques through making use of archaeological and historical documents. Our methodology is founded on the description of chaînes opératoires as well as on an analysis of factors that influence the geographic distribution of architectural techniques. The results of this analysis allow us to discuss the historical evolution of these techniques and the factors at the root of the observed variability.
