VESTITURA : une base de données critique des décors moulurés pour l’archéologie du bâti (Moyen Âge – époque industrielle)

Abstract : VESTITURA is the current name of a work in progress, first on a personal scale and then in a collaborative logic within the ArAr laboratory (UMR 5138), of a database of molded decorations encountered during my daily practice as a building archaeologist. Its primary goal is to make a detailed inventory of the various modenatures and molded elements that can be archaeologically documented, but this tool is conceived as much as a basis for comparison, as a basis for criticism and reflection (notably around the phenomena of archaism and avant-garde). In fact, the base serves the archaeologist of the building to record his vestiges, then to bring them closer to other similar elements, but the base also makes it possible to integrate old typological references of history of art to read them again in the light of concrete examples attested in a more recent and more pointed way. In this perspective, the architecture of the database necessarily includes several levels of data consideration, in an embedded way, from the simple act of inventory to the highlighting of referentials: at the first level of use, the database relies on concrete occurrences observed in the field and documented (photos, sketches, surveys, profiles), but the highest level allows to identify more global dating aesthetic types. The use of VESTITURA is intended to be flexible in order to adapt to the field or to documentary monitoring (examples taken from the bibliography), and the aim is to make it, in the long run, a collaborative database like the ARTEFACT database. In fact, the project is currently made up of regionalized examples (centered on the Center-East of France, where I work), but the architecture of the database can be reused for any other spatial area, provided that it is fed with local examples.
