Étude des TCA en archéologie sur le bâti : vers des référentiels typochronologiques ?

Abstract : In building archaeology, “dating” materials are often lacking. A new research potential is opened by the study of architectural terracotta (TCA). Generally quite frequent on built sites, their study can often be simply integrated as a “post-excavation” study, following the example of ceramology, but it sometimes requires more specific approaches. Thus, a study of a roof still in place requires sampling and can only be carried out at the time of restoration, in close association with the roofers. In recent years, the problems and methods have been renewed, particularly thanks to researchers who have formed a national and inter-institutional network: the TCA network. Research is at different stages of progress depending on the region and the chronological period. Concerning the covers, for the ancient period, real typo-chronological references have been proposed for the tegulae of Central-Eastern Gaul or in the Pays de Loire: can we establish the equivalent in other regions? For the alto-medieval period, the production and use of tegulae and imbrices in cover has been highlighted in particular in the Centre region. What about elsewhere? Subsequently, the date of appearance of the flat tile with or without a hook has been the subject of extensive research in Burgundy, but it remains to be refined in many areas. The same is true for floor tiles, bricks and a wide variety of TCAs which would deserve more developed archaeological studies. We hope to draw the attention of all archaeologists, prescribers as well as operators, to the interest of collecting these materials, of studying them with renewed methods in order to create and add to typo-chronological reference frames. Many built sites, poor in non-CAT furniture, would benefit from having these points of comparison.
