Le pan de bois et la nécessité de confronter l’étude archéologique du bâti aux datations dendrochronologiques

Abstract : The appreciation of a historical monument is still too often done by its aestheticism or its age, to the detriment of its history. As far as the wood panelling is concerned, the idea that it can be understood only by the dendrochronological approach is still too regularly accepted. Very often, this method is favored even before the idea of an archaeological study, especially by architects. However, it is the archaeology of the building that allows us to highlight the architectural evolution of a building and to interpret the absolute dates by taking into account the supply of raw materials or the notion of replacement. Through two examples, we will demonstrate how a dendrochronological dating, carried out independently of a study of the building, can lead to a bad interpretation and understanding of the evolution of a timber-framed building and a fortiori, distort its restoration project. It is a question here of placing the archaeological and stratigraphic approach at the heart of the study, and of combining it with other disciplines such as dendrochronology or archival research. The objective is to understand the building as a whole and its context and thus to better orientate the restoration or enhancement projects.
