Le diagnostic archéologique : instrument d’une politique du patrimoine ou de la recherche archéologique ?

Abstract : The 2001 law on preventive archaeology established « archaeological diagnostic » as a necessary (or even indispensable) practice in the administrative process determining the presence or otherwise of archaeological remains and the prescription of a preventive archaeological excavation. However, before being included in the French Heritage Code, archaeological diagnostic had already been in use for several decades and was part of a scientific research process that was then less well endowed.
