Reconstitution de la dynamique forestière par l’analyse de la matière organique des sols par spectroscopie dans le proche infrarouge : l’exemple d’un terroir médiéval abandonné, l’Elmerforst (67, France)

Abstract : The Elmerforst forest is located in the Alsatian foothills of the Vosges massif. The name of this forest derives from the name of a place called Elbersforts that was created by clearing in the 12th century and disappeared in the first third of the 16th century. The territory encompassed by this ancient village was purchased piece by- piece by the Œuvre Notre-Dame foundation — the institution that was in charge of the construction and maintenance of Strasburg Cathedral — in the 16th and 17th centuries. The territory is currently entirely covered by forest, with the exception of a central clearing. Archaeological excavations conducted in the clearing uncovered remnants of this locality. As for the historical archives and maps, they provide only sporadic information about the crops grown on this land during the medieval period. However, twenty soil profiles were collected and analysed by near-infrared spectroscopy in a laboratory so as to assess changes or stability in land uses and, where applicable, to establish the boundaries of the territory spanned by village. Several profiles from woodland areas close to the village attest to a recent forest history, occurring after abandonment, whereas more peripheral profiles point to a more ancient forest history. On the basis of these profiles, a map of the territory as managed by a small village community during the Middle Ages can be proposed. The results also provide input for discussions on the notion of ancient forests that are not all of the same age.
