De l’intégration des structures linéaires dans les systèmes d’information géographique : cahier des charges pour la construction d’une base de données

Abstract : After our participation in a national survey project on land management and a diachronic research programme focusing on the Caen Plain we have developed a database to integrate linear features (enclosures, plots and paths) in a GIS. These linear features have specific properties, relating to their capacity to transform land and the people who lived there. From an archaeological point of view, they have often little archaeological material and provide poor stratigraphic information. We are therefore attentive to the archaeological value of the data and in particular to the chronology. The database has three tables each using a different spatial scale. It is constructed on a large scale from raw data acquired from each archaeological feature, whether from a survey or an excavation. The intermediary and small scales are interpretative data tables that link on a large-scale linear features from one intervention to another and record the points that link old land registers to archaeological site plans. This makes it possible to establish a phasing of structures and map features. This database should make it possible to maintain the continuity between the different scale levels. This favours a transdisciplinary approach for archaeologists and geoarchaeologists to relationships, processes, continuities, ruptures, whilst providing information for social and environmental sciences in general.
