Enseignes et ampoules de pèlerinage découvertes en contexte sur des sites médiévaux en Picardie (Hauts-de-France)

Abstract : The development of large-scale preventive excavations carried out by Inrap in rural and urban areas over the last five years on medieval occupations in Picardy has brought to light a small series of signs and pilgrimage lamps collected in context. This particularity has an innovative character that allows for the renewal of regional knowledge on this category of furniture, which is often devoid of provenance and, moreover little or not at all studied. It is proposed to present these unpublished objects, which carry information in more than one way and which originally testify to the accomplishment of a pilgrimage. Their study sheds new light on the role played by the many local shrines in pilgrimages and places of devotion in Western Christendom.
