« L’occasion fait le larron » : pour une meilleure intégration du potentiel documentaire des diagnostics archéologiques « négatifs » réalisés en contexte de plaine alluviale

Abstract : Diagnostic phase is the first of an archaeological intervention. It is essential for geoarchaeologists because, if no archaeological remains or structures are found, it is the only opportunity to access the stratigraphic sequences. The valley bottom sectors, due to the power of their sedimentary records and the good conservation of ecofacts, are essential areas for understanding the morphosedimentary and environmental evolution of the catchment basins. They should be considered as real reservoirs of information on past environments through multidisciplinary approaches (geoarchaeology, biomarkers, etc.). In research sectors with low anthropogenic impact known as « off-site », paleo-environmental, geomorphological and chronostratigraphic reconstitution work should be encouraged as they are a fundamental asset for understanding the modalities and contexts of site occupation on a wider scale, especially as the diagnostic phase will be the only one to explore them. With this article, we would like to sensitize actors of archaeology on the importance of systematic observations of such areas during the diagnostic phase and to show the significant informative potential that results from this by presenting examples, one in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Moselle valley) and the other in Autrecourt-et-Pourron (Ardennes, France).
