Aux marges de Montpellier, le château de Clermont dans la vallée de l’Hérault : histoire castrale, histoire seigneuriale

Abstract : The findings of the archaeological diagnosis of the walls of the castle of Clermont-l’Hérault make it possible to propose, for the first time, a timeline for the fortified site, today abandoned and reduced to the status of public garden. The three stages retained, supported by historical study, can be used to monitor changes in the defensive system from the first half of the 12th century until the end of the 15th century, via the second half of the 13th century and the reconstruction of the fortress modelled on royal buildings that became widespread in the aftermath of the Albigensian Crusade.
