The notion of "digitization of the world" recently evoked by the CEO of the CNRS Antoine Petit (2019), seems to constitute an inevitable horizon for our societies, to the point of becoming synonymous and condition of progress and quality. Applied to the field of research, particularly in the field of Human and Social Sciences, this notion, which is polymorphous, is gradually becoming an obligation for its actors in the "war" that French public research must wage, among other things, to become a leading player on the international stage. But it is above all to be able to hope to obtain the funding it needs that research must submit to this injunction. By taking archaeology as an exemplary disciplinary field, the process of massification of the digitisation of the knowledge produced and published presents as many stimulating perspectives as it raises questions. After reminding us that the digital domain must be considered as a set of devices at the service of a technical government enterprise, the uses of these devices are presented as one of the conditions of possibility for archaeological research. However, it is also shown that digitisation, which should benefit the greatest number of people, will probably not win everyone's support, for various reasons: the meaning given to this movement (why digitise? ), the heterogeneity of practices around the same objects of knowledge and the same technical devices used, the lack of training and support for those involved, the anthropological dimension induced by digitisation since it obliges the user to submit to technical devices rather than the other way round, the in-depth modification of the professional identities of researchers and their activities, etc. (Tufféry, 2019). The questioning of the digitisation process in archaeological research, which is the subject of our thesis and the work of other researchers, is based on a historiographical and epistemological perspective that allows us to question the appearance and extension of "digital territories" in archaeology. It is thus an opportunity to consider how archaeology, now on the road to digitising its research practices, is part of the "digital humanities". It remains to be seen whether it is simply a community of practices, as envisaged by the Humanistica association, or whether it is the bearer, in its field, of a real epistemological and scientific break (Foucault, 1969).
