Les agglomérations non fortifiées du nord-est de la Gaule à La Tène moyenne et finale (cités des Leuques et des Médiomatriques)

Abstract : The record of non-fortified Gallic agglomerations in the north-east of Gaul and in the civitates of the Leuci and the Mediomatrici in particular is comparativly scanty. Little work has been done on this type of settlement in the region. By using findings on the subjetct made elsewhere, it is possible to identify three agglomerations with certainty on the basis of excavated structures. Ten other very poorly known sites may be added to the list. All of the data available for these thirteen agglomerations are presented. They re-situate these settlements within the series of craft-based settlements identified throughout Celtic Europe. The geographical perspective makes it possible to propose the existence of a unified network of grouped settlements, both fortified and unfortified, spaced some 20 to 30 km apart, that seem to havestructured the economic life f Gallic civitates. This network, that made light of territorial boundaries, was added to and made tighter in Roman times.
