Un diagnostic au cœur de la ville médiévale d’Orchies : découverte d’un ensemble statuaire remarquable

Abstract : An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in Orchies in 2013 at the corner of Letellier and Gaston Leroy streets prior to the construction of a building. An area of 644 m² was investigated. The work revealed medieval occupation dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries with front street wooden walled buildings with beaten clay soil floors and having back plots. Several pits were detected and sampled ; however, the presence of groundwater prohibited full and thorough investigation. The demolition of the buildings in the late 14th or 15th century was followed by a re-cultivation. It seems that there was no building on the plot thereafter until the late 18th or early 19th century. At the level of the post-medieval garden a pit had been cut. On archaeological excavation this was found to contain an outstanding set of four statues, fashioned from limestone, including three in very good condition. Two of the figures represent monks and probably date back to the second half of the 16th or the 17th century. The two other statues date from the early 16th century. One is St. Agnes, the other Mary Magdalene. The stratigraphic position of this pit and the 18th century ceramics found in the filling lead us to think that these statues could have been hidden therein to protect them during the turmoil of the French Revolution.
