Parcellaires de l’âge du Bronze ancien à Saint-Aubin-d’Arquenay « Éco-quartier des Vignettes » (Calvados)

Abstract : The preventive excavation (5 800 m²), that was carried out at Saint-Aubin-in Arquenay, before the building of a housing estate by Bouygues, has brought to light occupations dating to the recent/late Neolithic (locus 1), Iron Age ditches (locus 3) and Roman/Medieval structures as well as bomb craters from the Second World War. However, most of the archaeology dates to the Early Bronze Age, corresponding to three phases of occupation. Locus 2-a is represented by a single curvilinear ditch (St. 19/78) orientated south-east/north-west and dating to 1900-2000 cal BC. Locus 2-b is an oblong enclosure and a system of curvilinear ditches, which seem to be part of a larger field system of irregular enclosures. Very little pottery was found in the ditches, they have been dated by the fact that they are cut by the curvilinear system of locus 2-c, and by the radiocarbon analysis of charcoal found at the base of the fill. A group of probable storage structures has also been found in this area of the site. Locus 2c includes a curvilinear ditch (doubled on part of its length) orientated south-east/north-west, and an angular ditch. These structures have been completely reorganized and pertain more to ranch boundaries probably used for the management of cattle. The pottery discovered in one of the ditches dates to the Early Bronze Age 2. Two raised hearths, one presenting important pottery finds, were dug at the end of phase 2-b or at the beginning of phase 2-c. The small excavation area provides an inevitably reduced vision but does reveal overlapping structures and changes in orientation that are probably the result of a change in the spatial organization of the site during the same cultural phase (Early Bronze Age). The site seems to be located on the periphery of a vast field system that covers the central part of Saint-Aubin-in Arquenay, approximately one kilometer from the river Orne and hardly more from the coastline.
