La butte des Carmes pendant l'Antiquité

From 1981 to 1985, the excavation of les Carmes concentrated upon a not inconsiderable part of the ancient and medieval town. Occupancy in the archaic and classical periods, appears to be limited to the eastern part of the hill. Clay extraction quarries and then dwellings from the Hellenistic period seem to have spread on each side of a road running from east to west, in accordance with an orientation closely related to the cardinal points. Below, to the west, the vestiges like those of les Carmelins basin), are oriented along different axes. Finally, in the Roman period, the creation of a large platform near the top of the hill resumes this orientation which survives today in the form of the rue des Grands-Carmes.

De 1981 à 1985, la fouille des Carmes a concerné une partie non négligeable de la ville antique et médiévale. L'occupation à l'époque archaïque et classique apparaît limitée à la partie orientale de la colline. Des carrières d'extraction d'argile puis des habitations d'époque hellénistique semblent se répartir de part et d'autre d'une voie est-ouest, selon une orientation proche des points cardinaux. En contrebas, à l'ouest, les vestiges (comme ceux du bassin des Carmelins) s'orientent selon des axes différents. Enfin à l'époque romaine, la création d'une grande plate-forme près du sommet de la butte reprend cette orientation, matérialisée jusqu'à nos jours par la rue des Grands-Carmes.
