Le comptage des céréales et des légumineuses en carpologie : recensement des méthodes utilisées en France et essais comparatifs sur des assemblages archéobotaniques

Abstract : A survey was conducted among archaeobotanists working in France, to identify different methods of counting cereal grains and chaff and seeds of pulses used in basic graphical methods (diagrams and pie charts). We have recorded eight methods for cereals grains and six for pulses. Differences are visibles as the integration or not of fragments and in the methods used to evaluate the minimum number of individuals (NMI) from these residues. The different approaches, to which are added two other methods described in the scientific literature, were tested on archaeological samples. Their comparison allows us to see what is the influence of the method of counting on quantity of a taxon, as well as changes in proportions between species. The quantity of fragments, and how they are incorporated in the calculations, significantly influence the results. We are not yet able to define the perfect method that would suit all researchers: it appears that certain procedures deliver very similar results, and others involve under- or overestimations.
